The 2024 Democratic National Convention is a presidential nominating convention in which delegates of the United States Democratic Party will choose the party's nominee for president of the United States in the 2024 presidential election.
Location and Dates
The convention will be held in Chicago, Illinois, from August 19–22, 2024.
Purpose
The purpose of the convention is to nominate the party's presidential and vice presidential candidates, adopt a party platform, and conduct other party business.
Delegates
The convention will be composed of delegates from each of the 50 U.S. states, the District of Columbia, and the five U.S. territories. The number of delegates each state or territory receives is based on the party's performance in the 2020 presidential election.
Nomination Process
The presidential nominee will be chosen through a series of primary elections and caucuses held in each state and territory. The candidate who receives the majority of delegate votes at the convention will be nominated.
Platform
The party platform will be drafted by a committee of delegates and will be voted on by the full convention.
Other Business
In addition to nominating the presidential and vice presidential candidates and adopting a party platform, the convention will also conduct other party business, such as:
- Electing a new Democratic National Committee chair
- Adopting rules for the 2024 Democratic presidential primary
- Holding speeches and rallies
